It’s something of a centerpiece on an album that moves in several directions, reaching for varied constituencies, while ultimately staying focused on Vandross’s trademark buttery vocals. In addition to "Dance," there’s more adult-contemporary balladry ("Buy Me a Rose"), lightly sassy soul ("If I Didn’t Know Better"), and a number of collaborations with hip-hoppers that often work surprisingly well. While suspending disbelief is hard when considering Luther and Foxy Brown as a couple ("If It Ain’t One Thing"), remakes of soft-R&B classics with Beyonce Knowles and Busta Rhymes prove to be highlights. With the Destiny’s Child singer, Vandross actually improves on the familiar Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway take of "The Closer I Get to You," turning in a cut that recalls his slow-burning signature reworking of "A House is Not a Home." A languid turn at "Lovely Day," with a purring Busta, works almost as well. (The "Part II" remix is superfluous, however.) Otherwise, Dance is in the vein of post-‘80s Vandross discs, and guaranteed to please fans. --Rickey Wright | | | Product Details: | | | Audio CD Release Date:

Review of "Dance With My Father" CDJan 30, 2010 I purchased this CD and another as a birthday gift for a friend. He told me that he really enjoyed it and was happy to receive it. I did not hear it so I cannot comment as to my own reaction to it. I just know that he really enjoyed it.

Not The Way Many Would've Wanted Luther To Go Out But Not Without It's CharmsJan 21, 2010 In the few years since release of his excellent post millenium comeback album Dance with My Father his health had gone downhill to the point where many felt his life was in danger. Sadly it turned out all of those people were right but regardless this turned out to be his final release. For conservation of strengh perhaps Luther choses to take on a lot more guests artists than is typical for his trademark self involved approch to his own music. What results in this album taking such a big nosedive,by degrees from his previous album is not the seeming trendiness of this concept by the guests involved themselves. Luther Vandross was......Foxy Brown?Busta Rhymes?Queen Latifah? Well needless to say some of the hip-hop friendly production of "If It Ain't One Thing" and "Hit Me Again" is interesting in as much as Luther has already been there with some of his early 90's albums. Not only that but even though there's a promise to "keep it clean" some of Foxy Brown's rapping in particular is just too abrasive and "real" to really even contrast with Luther's romantic reflections. The contrast between the vocal and musical arrangement on his verion of "Lovely Day" is very obvious on the other hand. Not only does Luther fail to hold that famous long note of Bill Withers' original but the music is mildly out of tune with his vocals, not helped by Busta Rhymes very awkward presense. The deeply funky sound he's trying to achieve was a great idea but.....sadly it doesn't come together in a way that makes it sound very exciting. On the other hand some of the ballads here go right back to the same trouble he had in the 90's: bland with a slight cookie cutter quality. "The Closer I Get To You",a duet with Beyonce is romantic enough if your in the right mood but doesn't deal with anything new on the part of either artist involved and trust me: it could've been a beautiful thing as opposed to something just okay. Now the title track has a lyric that is rather sentimentally satisfying for sure, especially when he actually muses on wanting that last "dance with my father" after remembering him telling him to follow the rules-at least that's pretty real I suppose. But I can't say the music rises to the great level of which Luther is capable of and had used in the past on occasion. Not a new story no but that song needed much better conseived and original music than it got. "Right In The Middle" and the closer "They Said You Needed Me" are the better of the slower tunes as they find a good place within the post disco urban funk midtempo sound of the previous album. Even if it marks somewhat of a return to Luther's musically uneven qualities......he didn't have the opportunity to better this so despite it's flaws it will have to do as his goodbye.
As expected!Jan 25, 2009 As expected I use Amazon because I get what I want from this service. I am satisfied with the process from beginning to end.
Thank You.
